Local students received new reading materials as part of a partnership with St. Joseph’s hometown MINK League baseball team.

Rally, mascot of the St. Joseph Mustangs, appeared on Wednesday afternoon at the St. James campus of the St. Joseph Catholic Academy, presenting books to gathered elementary school students. A raffle conducted during a previous Mustangs game raised funds for the purchase of the books.

“They love Rally, the kids love Rally,” said Brandy Flores, a St. James kindergarten teacher. “And they just get so excited to see him. So, I told them that someone from the Mustangs was coming today, and they were asking if it was going to be Rally the horse, so they were excited.”

Books have been purchased for every grade school campus in the academy, and Rally is next expected to appear at 2:45 p.m. Friday at the St. Francis Xavier campus, at South 26th and Seneca streets. Guests are asked to check in at the school office ahead of Friday’s event.
